| Send in the clones... When Attack of the Clones was in pre-production George Lucas took the bold decision to have all of the clone troopers seen in the movie created in ILM’s computers. This afforded greater flexibility while shooting, limiting the arduous, time-consuming task of co-ordinating and directing hundreds of expensive extras in take after take. It also allowed more creativity and control over the clone trooper shots. So, for the first time ever on a Star Wars film, the Empire’s nascent foot soldiers never actually existed as physical, three dimensional helmets or costumes. Instead they were created entirely within the confines of the ILM hard drives. Creating an actual clone trooper helmet for your collections required we get the CGI model from the Lucasfilm archives. That sounds simple enough, but while the format of the ILM file gives a perfectly smooth and curved helmet on a movie screen if you get real close you will see that a the helmet is actually comprised of many flat facets. When building an animation model, designers try to keep the model’s file size as small as possible. This keeps computer rendering time, required to build, skin and manipulate the movements of the model, to a minimum. Our engineer, Mark Costas, had to take these raw files and begin building back in all the necessary information required to output these complex curves and smooth geometries of the helmet in the real world. |
