Capable of performing scans, analyzing data and sharing it quickly and efficiently with other devices, starships or Starfleet command, the tricorder has other valuable functions. It can record trials, play holographic messages and its universal translator allows it to communicate with non-Starfleet computer systems. It can even sync with other units to form a complex and powerful computer network. The TR-590, or Mark IX Science Tricorder, replaced the TR-580 as standard issue equipment. Built by custom prop house, HMS Studios, in Hollywood, CA, the new design was smaller and more compact that the Mark VII prop which it replaced. Fabricated from custom vac-formed shells and outfitted with a large array of LED's, the Mark IX Tricorder prop looked eye-catching and very functional. Starting with an examination of the original prop, our engineers worked with original components supplied by HMS to reproduce this iconic prop in die cast. Adding weight and a more substantial feel to the prop was important given this was supposed to be a scientific instrument traveling to strange new worlds.
