We carefully reviewed the prototype. The complexity of the detail and shape of the Falcon would have made the manufacturing tooling and production costs prohibitively expensive if we proceeded to make the Falcon as a wholly die-cast miniature. Also too many compromises to the detailing were needed to accommodate the limitations of die-cast production techniques. You can see in the above images that perpendicular surface details and panel lines have been omitted and detailing on the engine vents and on piping has been thickened and undercuts filled to allow for the die-cast parts to be pulled from the tooling. Clearly we had to rethink our approach. Fortunately one of our factories is expert at manufacturing mixed media models. They already produce extremely detailed high-end 1/43rd scale collectible car miniatures and so we turned to them to apply their proven techniques to solving our own particular spacecraft problems. |
